Luigi Monteverde was born on 10 September 1841 in Lugano and was a skilled painter in genre paintings. Raised in a large and humble family, he emigrated to South America in 1855. In 1862 he returned to his homeland and began to frequent Antonio Barzaghi-Cattaneo's studio and the Brera Academy in Milan. He exhibited some works, including "Between two litigants, the third enjoys", a genre painting, "The disconcerted escape", "The inexperienced cleric", "The sinister meeting" and some studies on the customs of the peasants of the Canton of Ticino, carried out with mastery. His costume studies are notable, as are his portraits and landscapes. He died in Lugano on 2 January 1923.
