Adolphe-Joseph-Thomas Monticelli was born on 14 October 1824 in Marseille and attended the local Academy where he received his first art lessons. He later moved to Paris, where he continued to take art courses at the École des Beaux-Arts. In the French capital, Monticelli often visited the Louvre, copying the works of the great classics; this was very important for his pictorial training. Monticelli, contrary to academic precepts, painted with bold brushstrokes, rebelling against the usual smooth precision, he loved playing with color, using it in various shades within a single painting. Monticelli used these techniques to create romantic scenes and park landscapes bathed in light. He never exhibited at the various Salons and was free to sell his works. Vincent van Gogh had a great desire to meet the artist personally, but unfortunately Monticelli died a few months before van Gogh reached Paris, on 29 June 1886.
