Charles Montlevault was born in Lyon in 1835 and studied at the city's Ecole des Beaux Arts. Subsequently, he began working at the Arles-Dufour silk maison, a job which led him to travel a lot. In addition to being a landscape painter, Montlevault was also an orientalist, inspired by his stays in North Africa, the Middle East, France and the Netherlands. He painted many panels for the Lyon inns and cafés he frequented. His paintings are characterized by warm colors and exotic themes, but Montlevault also painted landscapes of his region. Thanks to his work in the silk industry, Montlevault had the opportunity to discover North Africa and the Near East. He died in 1897.
