Pietro Morando Biography

Pietro Morando (1889 - 1980) was born in Alessandria in 1889 where he died in 1980.
He grew up in the Orti neighborhood of Alessandria where he finished high school. He travels extensively in France and other countries but lives his whole life in his village. He periodically attended the Albertina Academy in Turin, and in 1913 he was able to participate in painting courses at the Brera School of Fine Arts in Milan thanks to a scholarship. He meets Angelo Morbelli, whose studio he frequents, and momentarily shares his love for divisionism.
Even with the limited resources that World War I offered him, his passion for drawing inspired him to create a large number of pieces. With the help of the sculptor Leonardo Bistolfi of Casale Monferrato he created war drawings (almost a reportage) which were later published in the volume "I Giganti".
He spent many years frequenting Carlo Carrà's studio in Milan, where he made acquaintances, artistic comparisons and cultural exchanges.
He is known for his frank and incisive language, which he uses to offer his subjects, who are almost always poor, porters and farmers but also glimpses of his hometown and the Monferrato countryside.
Morando's work is found at the Civic Museum of Rovereto and at the Civic Art Gallery of Alessandria.
