Hippolyte Francois Moreau, born in 1832 in Dijon, was a French sculptor well known above all for his bronze sculptures representing young women. He received his first art lessons from his father, the famous sculptor Jean-Baptiste Moreau. Having arrived in Paris as a young man, he decided to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts under the guidance of François Jouffroy. In 1863 Moreau exhibited for the first time at the Salon of French artists and continued to show his work there until 1914. He won medals for his works at the Paris Universal Exhibition in both 1878 and 1900, creating large-scale decorative pieces such as pottery and figurines. Among his most famous sculptures is the representation of the famous French mathematician Alexis Clairaut, created in 1880 and now permanently displayed on the façade of Paris City Hall. He died in 1927 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.
