Vairo Mongatti was born in Florence in 1934 and is an esteemed painter and engraver. After completing his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, he began his intaglio activity in 1963, choosing to work mainly with etching. His catalog of engraving works numbers around 550 matrices, 50 of which were created in the last five years. His works usually depict landscapes and still lifes. Mongatti prints on his own and has participated in various national events, including the 4th National Biennial of Engraving "Giuseppe Polanschi" in Cavaion Veronese in 2009, Grafica ed Ex Libris in Casale Monferrato in 2011 and 2013, and the 1st Biennial of Italian engraving Carmelo Floris in Olzai in 2012/2013. In 2011, Mongatti held a solo exhibition at the Fondazione Il Bisonte in Florence and participated in the collective exhibition Grafica Oggi. Journey to the Italy of engraving in Turin.
