Raffaello Morghen Biography

Raffaello Morghen, also known as Raffaele Morghen (Portici, 19 June 1758 – Florence, 8 April 1833), was an Italian engraver. He was the son of Filippo Morghen, a Florentine engraver, who moved to Naples at the invitation of King Charles of Bourbon (the future Charles III). In 1779 in Rome he was a pupil of Giovanni Volpato, at whose school he perfected himself; his patron was the Venetian ambassador Girolamo Zulian, an art enthusiast, who also hosted Antonio Canova at Palazzo Venezia. In 1794 Morghen moved to Florence to teach woodcut engraving techniques at the Academy of Fine Arts, where the sculptors Lorenzo Bartolini and Giovanni Duprè also trained. He reproduced Raphael's frescoes in the Vatican and Leonardo da Vinci's The Supper. Upon his death he was buried in the Church of San Martino a Montughi. In the left nave of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence there is the monument created for Morghen by Odoardo Fantacchiotti in 1854, at the expense of the engraver's students.
