Frank Morris (1936 - 2021) was born in 1936 in Scotland and came to Australia in 1948 gaining citizenship in 1982. From the age of 7, Frank scoured the countryside around his home in Scotland for birds and their nests. At the age of 11, arriving in Sydney, he encountered a vast new world of unknown birds. His first book, a limited edition leather-bound work on birds of prey, was published in 1973. The paintings that formed the illustrations were exhibited at the Australian Galleries in Melbourne in April of that year. Seven more volumes were completed in 1981, however, the demands of ornithological imagery became so restrictive that Frank found his mind seeking other avenues of expression, and in the mid-1980s the first steps were taken to paint images other than scientific and appeared in a solo exhibition at the Holdsworth Galleries, Sydney in July 1987. This newfound freedom saw Frank venture into mythology, romance and thought-provoking works such as the "Four Seasons of Life". The acceptance of this new work was best realized in a solo exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery in January 2008. After years of battling various illnesses, Frank Morris passed away on August 14, 2021.
