William Morris Hunt Biography

William Morris Hunt (1824 - 1879) was an American painter who distinguished himself as the leader of the pictorial movement in vogue in Boston in the mid-19th century.
Born in Vermont to Jonathan Hunt, a member of Congress and member of one of the most important families of American artists, and Jane Maria Leavitt, who in turn came from a rich and wealthy family from Connecticut, William began to cultivate his passion for art. art already at a young age, but his father opposed his son's choice.
It was his mother who supported his wish and William left for Europe to study art in the best French schools. In Paris, he studied painting with Thomas Couture and also exhibited at the Salon, as well as participating in the Universal Expositions of 1855 and 1867. He was strongly influenced by the work of Jean-François Millet, who transmitted to him the principles and spirit of the Barbizon school .
Returning to America, he stopped first in Newport and then settled in Boston, where he acquired fame and prestige as an author of portraits, genre subjects and military scenes. In 1875 he published his book "Talkes on art".
