Morrison Andrew & Bruce Hannah Biography

Andrew Morrison, born in 1939, was a major designer for Knoll, responsible for the design of the Morrison System. Soon after graduating from college, he embarked on a teaching career at Pratt Institute. From the 1960s to the mid-1980s, he made a significant contribution to the creation of products for the Knoll company. In the early 1970s, he collaborated with Pratt alumnus Bruce Hannah to introduce an innovative, aluminum-framed lounge collection. Morison and Hannah designed several minimalist seating products for Knoll in the 1970s, including multiple "sling" seats. Morrison's designs for Knoll focus on ease of manufacturing, shipping and assembly. In 1986, Morrison gave his most significant contribution to Knoll with the Morrison System, a revolutionary, open-plan product that is still produced by the company. Designed to adapt and expand as the modern office designs and technology of the 1980s evolved Morrison system was created to meet their needs Morrison passed away on July 27, 2021 in New York.

Bruce Hanna was born in 1941. After graduating from Pratt Institute in 1963, he embarked on a career focused on using modern technology and materials to create efficient and practical products. Hanna worked as a creative partner with Andrew Morrison, with whom he introduced several innovative products for the Knoll company in the 1970s. Through their exploration of the possible applications of aluminum in modern furniture, the couple introduced a lounge seating system in 1971, followed a year later by a related line of tables, and in 1974 by a collection of office chairs. In 1976, Hanna founded his own studio, where he created numerous projects, including the "Hannah Desk System" for Knoll, chosen in 1990 by the Industrial Designers Society of America as "Design of the Decade". This innovative design includes the use of storage "pedestals" to support the countertop, a concept that eliminated the need for a frame, increasing flexibility and reducing costs. Since 1993, Bruce Hanna has taught at Pratt Institute.
