Carl Moser Biography
Carl Moser was born on 27 January 1873 in Bolzano.
14 years old, he started at a technical institute in Rovereto, but following his family's wishes, he decided to become a trader. After a year of military service, he worked in the family shop with his newly learned profession, but never stopped being active in the artistic field.
Franz von Defregger noticed Moser's talent and encouraged him to undertake artistic studies. Moser then decided to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After graduating, he traveled to Germany, Italy, Corsica and France, attending the Julian Academy in Paris, where in the summer of 1902 he met the Viennese painter Max Kurzweil, who proposed that he dedicate himself to color woodcuts.
In 1907, Moser returned to Bolzano where the artist then dedicated himself to woodcuts inspired by the South Tyrolean landscape, which are still renowned today, such as the first version of the Alpe di Siusi with the Sciliar, the Catinaccio and the masterpiece Castel Roncolo. Carl Moser died on July 23, 1940.
