Motherwell Robert (Washington, 1915 - Massachusetts, 1991) Robert Motherwell won a scholarship to the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles at the age of eleven and in 1923 he studied painting at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. He held his first solo exhibition in 1939 at the Raymond Duncan Gallery in Paris and subsequently settled in New York, where he studied art history at Columbia University. Read the full biography

Motherwell Robert (Washington, 1915 - Massachusetts, 1991) Robert Motherwell won a scholarship to the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles at the age of eleven and in 1923 he studied painting at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. He held his first solo exhibition in 1939 at the Raymond Duncan Gallery in Paris and subsequently settled in New York, where he studied art history at Columbia University. He traveled to Mexico with Roberto Matta and in 1942 participated in the “First Papers of Surrealism” exhibition at the Whitelaw Reid Mansion in New York. In 1944 he organized a solo exhibition at the Peggy Guggenheim gallery/museum Art of This Century. During his career the artist became friends with important artists such as Rothko, Newman, Ferber, Baziotes, Pollock, Hofmann, de Kooning.
