Fateh Moudarres (1922-1999) was a poet, novelist, painter and sculptor, born in Aleppo, Syria in 1922. He is considered a leader of the Syrian modern art movement.
After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome from 1956 to 1960, he went to Paris, where he graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in 1972. It was during his stay in the French capital that he began to explore the Its cultural heritage, particularly the forms found in ancient and primitive art, had previously been more influenced by European artistic movements such as Surrealism. Upon his return to Syria, Moudarres taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University. He was deeply influenced by regional political events, particularly the Lebanese Civil War, and used his art to raise awareness of such issues. A prolific artist, he continued to paint until his death in 1999.
