Alphonse Mucha was born on July 24, 1860 in Ivancice, Moravia. He is considered the pioneer of French Art Nouveau. From an early age he demonstrated great artistic talent, so much so that it is said that he learned to draw before he could walk. Despite this, he was rejected from art school in Prague and found himself self-taught.
After working as a decorator in Vienna, he moved to Munich at 25 to study at the National Academy of Art. Subsequently, he moved to Paris, where he found the opportunity to create a portrait for the then famous actress Sarah Bernhardt during the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
The affiches he created for Bernhardt have become very famous and prestigious among art collectors.
During his lifetime, he taught art in New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago.
Mucha died on 14 July 1939 in Prague.
