Otto Mühl was an Austrian artist born in Grodnau in 1925, known for being the co-founder of Viennese Actionism. Mühl began his artistic career by creating collages and sculptures, but later focused on performance art with the aim of overcoming the taboos imposed by society. Among his most notable performances are Kunst und Revolution, in which Mühl and three other artists broke into a classroom and mutilated themselves while singing the Austrian national anthem. This act marked the beginning of the end of Viennese Actionism, and the artists were forced to flee Austria to avoid prosecution. Mühl was sentenced to 7 years in prison in 1991 for sexual offenses with minors and drug use, and after serving his sentence he moved to a small village in Portugal where he lived until his death. Mühl's works, which often included blood, have been compared to those of Hermann Nitsch. Mühl was at the center of much controversy throughout his life, but he remains an important artist of Viennese Actionism.
