Lucio Munoz Biography

Lucio Muñoz, painter, was born in Madrid in 1929 and passed away in 1998 in the same city.
Muñoz studied at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando (Madrid), where he became friends with artists of the realist movement known as “realismo madrileño”. In 1954 he obtained a scholarship to study in Italy, and later - in 1956 - in Paris, where he became acquainted with the work of artists such as Dubuffet and Soulages. After a figurative beginning, he moved towards informal solutions, creating series of abstract works mainly on wood. In fact, wanting to use increasingly different materials, Lucio Muñoz began to experiment with materials of a more varied nature, such as burnt paper and wood.
His first solo exhibition was held in 1957 at the Fernando Fe gallery in Madrid. Since then he has held various solo and group exhibitions in cities across Spain, Europe and America. He obtained the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas (1983) and the gold medal for fine arts (1993). His works are exhibited in museums such as the Tate Gallery in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Nasjonalgalleriet in Oslo. In 1999 his first major retrospective was organized in Madrid, in the Sala de Exposiciones del Santander Central Hispano.
