Rutilio Muti Biography

Rutilio Muti was born in Vicchio, in Mugello, in 1904. Although he began painting late in life, his passion for drawing manifested itself as a child. Following his father's work as a bricklayer, he had the opportunity to visit every corner of Vicchiose. This avid exploration of the territory during his youth influenced his subsequent artistic choices. In 1925, after years of working as a bricklayer and decorator, he began to seriously dedicate himself to painting. Already in his first paintings the beauties of the rural landscape of Mugello were the main theme. In 1928 he met the painter Ferruccio Rontini, who became his mentor. In 1930 he held his first solo exhibition in Florence. In the 1930s and 1940s he traveled with Rontini throughout Italy, painting and selling his works. In 1936 he married. During the war he continued to work and sell his paintings. In 1953 his wife died, leaving him with three small children. Through painting, he found the strength to move forward. In the 1960s he painted Venice and Marina di Ravenna, demonstrating his ability to interpret distant landscapes with poetry and personality. In 1975 an anthological exhibition of his fifty years of painting was held in Vicchio. In 1983 his biography was published by Ferdinando Donzelli, in a series dedicated to Tuscan painters. Muti continued to paint until 1993, when he was stopped by an illness that ultimately led to his death in 1995.
