Jose' Navarro Biography

José Navarro (1867-1923) was a Spanish painter, active in Valencia and known for his orientalist paintings, still lifes and landscapes.
Born in Godella, near Valencia, he received his artistic training at the Academy of San Carlo in Valencia, a city to which he remained very attached throughout his life. Around 1920 he moved to Madrid and traveled extensively in Europe and North Africa to broaden his knowledge of the arts. He visited Morocco when he was still young and there developed a predilection for oriental subjects.
Navarro was a great admirer of Joaquín Sorolla and Mariano Fortuny, who may have been an inspiration for the trip to Morocco.
Thanks to his talent, Navarro was considered one of the most deserving painters to represent the Valencian School. In 1908 he made a trip to Rio de Janeiro, where he exhibited his works and achieved great recognition. Navarro died on February 6, 1923 in Valencia.
