Neshat Shirin (Iran, 1957) Shirin Neshat is an Iranian photographer and video artist. In 1999 she was awarded at the Venice Biennale, revealing herself as one of the best contemporary artists in analyzing social problems regarding Islamic culture. The main themes of her artistic research are: the condition of the Islamic woman, the relationship with the male world and that of Islamic culture with Western culture. Neshat continued his art studies at the University of Berkeley, then settled in New York. The return to his homeland in 1990 influenced the artist's research who, through photography and videos, approached the problems connected to female identity and the relationship between genders in Islamic reality. Neshat received important recognitions and prizes, such as the first international prize at the Venice Biennale in 1999, the grand prize at the Kwangju Biennale in 2000 and the Lillian Gish Prize in New York in 2006.
