Paul Nicholls Biography
Paul Nicholls (1944 - ) Born in England in 1944, Nicholls was passionate about nineteenth-century Italian painting. From 1967 to 1975 he directed the Galleria Sant'Ambrogio in Milan (formerly Galleria Gussoni) with nineteenth and twentieth century exhibitions from Fattori to Sironi, from the Cobra group to Sutherland. Since 1976 he has specialized in nineteenth-century Italian art. Among contributions to exhibitions and publications: Nino Costa, Milan 1982; Pelizza da Volpedo, Garbagnate Milanese 1996; Dictionary of Art, London 1996; Nineteenth-century Italian painters and painting, Novara 1997-1999; Telemaco Signorini, Padua 2009-2010. Giacomo Favretto, Rome-Venice, 2010; Divisionism, Tortona 2012; Corcos, Padua, 2014, Beppe Ciardi, Turin 2019, Ettore Tito, Treviso 2020, Il Mito di Venezia, Novara 2021. Appraiser of the Milan Chamber of Commerce and member of RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), he is also a consultant for Sotheby's for the nineteenth century for over 30 years. He currently collaborates with Open Care Art Advisory of Milan. Since 2016 Nicholls has mainly dealt with archiving, consultancy and appraisals. In 2017 he created a site dedicated to the fame, fortune and failure of Italian artists in Victorian Britain.
