Artur Nikodem was born in Trento in 1870 and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich where he was a student of Franz von Defregger and W. Kaulbach. In 1890 he requested to be discharged from military service and returned to Trento to live with his parents. He began working at the post office, but in 1893 he moved to Merano where he exhibited his first works and became part of the "Meraner Künstlerbund". His works were regularly presented at the group's exhibitions. In 1908 he moved with his family to Innsbruck where he died on 10 February 1940. His work was a clear component of modern Tyrolean art in the interwar period and was influenced by the artistic trends of Munich, but also by Tyrolean landscape painting. Despite the great success he had in the 1920s, Nikodem's art was considered "degenerate" by the Nazis and the artist lived his last years in a very solitary way, without the possibility of exhibiting his work. He died on 10 February 1940 in Innsbruck.
