Umberto Nordio Biography

Umberto Nordio, born in Trieste in 1891, was a notable Italian architect. After enrolling at the Polytechnic of Milan, he obtained his degree in 1919. During his studies, Nordio showed a keen interest in twentieth-century Milanese culture. Returning to Trieste, he began a period of apprenticeship in the construction sites of his father Enrico Nordio, a renowned local architect. Among Nordio's first works we can mention the ICAM public houses (1925-26) and the INCIS houses (1929), characterized by a still strongly academic approach. At the same time, he created more functionalist and utilitarian buildings, in which he integrated structural elements in exposed reinforced concrete, thus approaching modern rationalism. While maintaining a strong interest in the twentieth-century taste in his creations, Nordio has proven to be open to more functionalist solutions or occasionally characterized by monumental classicist accents. From 1947 to 1961, Nordio held the position of professor of technical architecture and architectural composition at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Trieste. Furthermore, he assumed the presidency of the Council of the Order of Architects of Trieste from 1950 to 1955. Umberto Nordio died on 28 October 1971 in Trieste.
