Crescenzo Onofri Biography
Crescenzo Onofri was born in Rome around 1632. According to biographer Leone Pascoli, he was Dughet's only direct pupil. He dedicated himself to landscape painting both on canvas and in fresco. Starting from 1671, Onofri took care of the decoration of the Roman palaces of the patrician families, including the Pallavicini, the Rospigliosi, the Theodoli, the Colonna, the Pamphilj and the Odescalchi. In the Pamphili Palace, he collaborated with Dughet on the decoration of the Throne Room, a room reserved for the Pope's visits, creating most of the gouache paintings with watercolor and chalk.
In 1689, Onofri moved to Florence where he worked at the court of Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici. There, he created large canvases with landscapes inspired by hunting trips in the Roman countryside, which were destined for the rooms of the Villa Medici in Pratolino. Crescenzo Onofri died around 1712 in Florence.
