Ottavio Orlandini Zuccagni Biography
Attilio Orlandini Zuccagni was born in Fiesole, in July 1784. At birth, his name was Giuseppe Orlandini, but, in memory of his maternal uncle the botanist Attilio Zuccagni, whose heir he became, he decided to change his name to Attilio Orlandini Zuccagni. After obtaining a degree in medicine from the University of Pisa and having made numerous trips, both in Italy and abroad, he moved to Florence. However, after becoming head of the statistics section at the Ministry of Finance, he committed himself to the study of geography and cartography, which he had discovered during his travels. In this context he began to work on his most important and ambitious projects, including the monumental compilations on the physical-historical and statistical chorography of Italy (1833-1845) and the statistical research on the Grand Duchy of Tuscany (1848-1856), which are were published in 7 volumes in two different series. From 1861, he held the chair of statistics at the Institute of Higher Practical and Specialization Studies in Florence, until his death on 25 November 1872 in Florence.
