Pimen Nikitich Orlov was born in 1812 in Ostrogozhsky Uyezd and died on October 6, 1865 in Rome. He was a well-known Russian painter who distinguished himself in a wide range of genres. During his career, he spent several years in Italy. From his youth, he demonstrated a great talent for drawing and decided to become an artist. He began his career as an apprentice to a traveling decorative painter, painting signs and billboards and doing simple paint work on walls and fences. He later began working as a portrait painter of local landowners and, in 1834, with the recommendations of the Gladkis, a noble Ukrainian family, he was able to attend courses at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. During his studies, he continued to paint portraits to support himself. In 1841, thanks to the support of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, he obtained a scholarship to study in Italy. He settled in Rome where he soon obtained numerous commissions. Orlov lived in Rome until his death on 6 October 1865.
