Lelio Orsi, born around 1508, came from Novellara. His initial artistic training was influenced largely by the works of Mantegna and Giulio Romano. In 1535, he painted the "Council of Witches and Monsters" frieze at Querciola Castle. The following year, in 1536, he moved to Reggio Emilia and began to decorate the facades of numerous important public buildings but after being involved in a bloody incident, he was tried and sentenced to exile. He then returned to Novellara and found work with a cadet branch of the Gonzaga family. With the study of Parmigianino and Correggio, his eccentric and highly highlighted style transformed into a more elegant and composed style. From 1554 to 1555, he was in Rome, where he had the opportunity to study the works of Michelangelo and meet the Tuscan mannerists of his circle, in particular Daniele da Volterra. Lelio Orsi died in Novellara on 23 May 1587.
