Alphonse Osbert was born in Paris in 1857. He conducted his studies at the School of Fine Arts in his city under the guidance of Henri Lehmann. Initially, his painting adhered to academic dictates, however, after a trip to Spain and a series of studies in the forest of Fontainebleau, his artistic ideas began to evolve. This change ended with a decisive turning point in the late 1880s, during which Osbert conducted experiments on light and approached the Salon des Indépendants where he met Maurice Denis and especially Puvis de Chavannes. The meeting with these artists significantly influenced his artistic conceptions so as to adhere to symbolism. Osbert joined the Rosicrucian order, participating in their Salons. He received commissions for large-scale works for important public buildings, including the decoration of the hall of the Vichy spa (1902 - 1904) and that of the Town Hall of Bourg-la-Reine (1911 - 1913). Alphonse Osbert died in the Paris atelier he had occupied since 1880 at the age of eighty-two in 1939.
