Faiga Ostrower Biography

Fayga Krakowski (1920 – 2001) was born in Łódź, Poland, to a Jewish family who fled to Brazil in 1934 to escape Nazi persecution. In 1941 she married fellow Polish émigré Heinz Ostrower who was then working in a local bookshop but eventually resumed her political activism for Marxism. In 1946, Ostrower enrolled in graphic arts courses at the Fundação Getulio Vargas, where he studied woodcutting with Axl Leskoschek and metalcutting with Carlos Oswald and Tomás Santa Rosa. Soon after, Ostrower earned several commissions to do book illustrations (linocut) and his reputation grew in Brazil. His work became increasingly abstract in the 1950s, and in 1955 he won a Fulbright grant to travel to New York. During this period, he studied graphic arts at the Brooklyn Museum Art School and Atelier 17 before its closing in September 1955. Ostrower also had a solo exhibition of his etchings, aquatints, and woodcuts at The Contemporaries, held May 9-28 1955. After returning to Brazil, Ostrower continued to show her work widely in Latin America, the United States and Europe. Ostrower also taught art in Brazil, as well as at Spellman College in Atlanta.
