Valentino Panciera Besarel (1829 - 1902) comes from a family that has been involved in the art of carving and wooden sculpture for many generations. His great-grandfather of the same name, for example, had been a pupil of Giampaolo Gamba, nicknamed Zampòl, and had followed in the footsteps of the famous sculptor Andrea Brustolon. After continuing the family tradition for many years in the Val di Zoldo, in the province of Belluno, Besarel moved to Venice in the 1960s. His fame as a sculptor grew rapidly, soon gaining recognition throughout Europe. His fortune was certainly due to the originality of his decorative approach, which combines a strong sculptural component for the purpose of furnishing.
