Gino Pancheri Biography

Gino Pancheri (1905 - 1943) was born in Trento on 23 August 1905 to Macedonio and Teresa Gentili. At the outbreak of the First World War he fled, displaced, to Kricov in Bohemia. In 1918 he returned to Trento and found work as an apprentice in a craftsman's workshop. Following his predisposition for painting, in 1925 he abandoned the workshop and moved to Milan to attend the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, where he met Edoardo Persico, Renato Birolli, Dino Garrone, Giacomo Manzù, Aligi Sassu and others. In 1928 he exhibited at the Salone degli Arcimboldi in Milan with the Gruppo d'Avanguardia, where he won the prize for young people. Returning to Trento he became friends with Tullio Garbari and founded the Gruppo Trentino d'Avanguardia. This was followed by years of prestigious public commissions - the decoration of the atrium of the Palazzo delle Poste (1933), of the Raffaello Sanzio Schools (1937) of the Galleria dei Legionari in Trento (1938) - and of participation in collective and personal exhibitions. In 1942 he was among the artists of the XXIII International Biennial Art Exhibition in Venice. He died in Trento on 22 December 1943.
