Pino Pascali Biography

Pino Pascali (Bari, 19 October 1935 – Rome, 11 September 1968) was an Italian artist.

It is a special bond that binds Capitolium Art to the city of Rome: our Roman headquarters is located in Mario Schifano's former studio, a place of great importance for the history of Italian art; Our experts will thus be able to personally and quickly evaluate the artist's works. Born to parents from Polignano a Mare, he spent his adolescence in Bari, where he attended the scientific high school, but, having already repeated his studies, he moved and graduated from the artistic high school in Naples. In 1956 he moved to Rome, where he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts and attended Toti Scialoja's lessons. After graduating he began working as an assistant set designer at RAI. At the same time he began a collaboration, which would later become continuous, with Sandro Lodolo, creating Caroselli, commercials and television theme tunes. In the sixties he participated in various group exhibitions, and in 1965 he held his first solo exhibition at the Roman gallery La Tartaruga. The following year he exhibited at the L'Attico Gallery. In just three years he achieved considerable critical acclaim and was noticed by influential Italian and international gallery owners. Right at the height of his career, while some of his works were on display at the Venice Biennale, he died prematurely in Rome in 1968 from the consequences of a serious motorcycle accident, his great passion. His tomb is located in the Polignano a Mare cemetery. An eclectic artist, Pascali was a sculptor, set designer and performer. In his works he brings together the roots of Mediterranean culture (the fields, the sea, the land and the animals) with the playful dimension of art: a cycle of works is dedicated to weapons, real toys made with recycled materials (metals , straw, ropes) and many of his works reproduce the icons and fetishes of mass culture. In the Reconstruction of Nature series, begun in 1967, Pascali analyzes the relationship between industrial mass production and nature. He is considered one of the most important exponents of Arte Povera, together with Michelangelo Pistoletto, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Eliseo Mattiacci, Renato Mambor, Sergio Lombardo and Cesare Tacchi. He was the first to formalize puddles with real water, from which the exhibition Fire image water earth was born, which took place at the Attico in May 1967.
