Rafael Perez was born on May 16, 1938 in Montalban, a town located west of Caracas, Venezuela. In 1958, he founded the Rafael Monasterio Academy of Arts in Maracay, in the Venezuelan state of Aragua, of which he served as director. Perez uses complementary colors, but the freedom with which he selects them further testifies to his autonomous and individual understanding of constructivist geometric art. His approach to color is not calculated, but subjective, and this gives his paintings their distinctive character. He lived and worked primarily in Venezuela, with brief periods spent in Switzerland. Perez died in Zurich in 2001.
