Giulio Perina was born in Villafranca di Verona in 1907, but moved to Mantua in 1917 where he lived until his death in 1985. He was an important painter in the artistic panorama of Mantua, participating in the most innovative movements of the twentieth century. He began exhibiting his works in 1926, when he participated in the Permanent Exhibition in Milan. In 1934 he met Umberto Lilloni and Oreste Del Bon and joined the group of Lombard clarists. He participated in the Rome Quadrennial in 1931 and 1939. In the 1940s his pictorial style veered towards a more expressionist language. Fascinated by a Fauves exhibition in Venice in 1950, he began using a bright palette with strong contrasts. In the 1960s and 1970s he became a lyrical naturalist.
