Paul Petit (1885-1960) was born in a village in France and his parents would have liked to see him become a carpenter, but from an early age he opted for painting so much so that he began studying Fine Arts in Dijon. His life as a painter was not ostentatious. After the trenches of the Great War, it was in Paris that he tried to sell his paintings. Far from fashion, his talent was noticed by the art historian Robert Rey. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and in various galleries such as Drouant and La Boétie. In the 1950s his works acquired a solid market value. He was essentially a painter of urban landscapes in Paris, in the south and on the banks of the Meuse.
