Edmond Petitjean was born in 1844 in Neufchâteau, France, the son of a lawyer who did not allow him to study art until he finished his courses at the Faculty of Law in Nancy. After abandoning law, Petitjean devoted himself to an artistic career and his success was immediate, with his work well received at the exhibition of the Lorraine Society of Friends of the Arts, and then, in 1873, with a brilliant debut at the Paris salon. Edmond Petitjean was born in 1844 in Neufchâteau, France, the son of a lawyer who did not allow him to study art until he finished his courses at the Faculty of Law in Nancy. After abandoning law, Petitjean devoted himself to an artistic career and his success was immediate, with his work well received at the exhibition of the Lorraine Society of Friends of the Arts, and then, in 1873, with a brilliant debut at the Paris salon. Petitjean loved to paint the countryside and villages, inspired by the tranquility of the rural surroundings. Upon his death in 1925, his works were held in many important French museums and private collections in both America and England and France.
