Johann Andreas Pfeffel Biography
Johann Andreas Pfeffel, engraver and art publisher, was born in 1674 in Bischoffingen. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he learned the use of chisel and scraping.
In 1711 he moved to Augsburg, where he opened an art shop with Christian Engelbrecht, which met with great success. He produced numerous works, including large portraits of contemporary figures, politicians, theatrical scenes, views of famous places, large drawings on religious orders, collections of images of saints for the devotional use of the people, art books, ornaments of various kinds.
The famous bible “Physica Sacra" by Johann Jakob Scheuchzer was published in 1731-1735 by his publishing house. He collaborated with other artists such as Johann Evangelist Holzer for engraving work. His son (1715-1768) also became an engraver of copper. Johann Andreas Pfeffel died in Augsburg in 1748.
