Josef Pieper, landscape, portrait and figure painter and lithographer, was born in Bochum in 1907. He undertook his studies at the Folkwang School in Essen and later at the Düsseldorf Academy under the guidance of Julius Paul Junghanns. During his education, he also had the opportunity to study in the Netherlands, Italy and the south of France. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards, including the Dürer Prize in 1935 and the National Grand Prize in 1936, reserved for painters and sculptors. Between 1937 and 1938, he exhibited the painting "Villa Massimo" at the German Academy in Rome, while from 1939 to 1944 he participated in the Great German Art Exhibition held at the Haus der Deutschen Kunst in Munich. Pieper died in 1977 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
