Coecke van Aelst (1502 - 1550) was a very versatile Dutch artist. He is remembered for his works of painting, architecture, sculpture and design. He studied under Bernard van Orley and in 1527 entered the Antwerp Guild.
He was head of a large workshop and acquired a reputation as one of the most important Antwerp painters of his time. It is primarily for his publishing activities that Coecke became famous. His books were strongly influenced by Italian art, and his translation of Sebastiano Serlio's architectural treatise of 1539 played an important role in spreading Renaissance ideas in the Netherlands. The Dutch edition of his translation allowed the writing of an English version of the book in 1611.
Pieter Bruegel the Elder, who would become his son-in-law, was also one of Coecke van Aelst's students.
