Francesco Piranesi Biography

Piranesi Francesco (Rome, 1758 - Paris, 1810) Francesco Piranesi was an Italian artist of the 18th century. The most important figure who influenced his life and career was his father, with whom he began to collaborate in the copperplate workshop in Strada Felice. His first two autograph works are present in the "Trofeo o sia magnifica Colonna Coclide", a work composed of three series dedicated to the Traiana, Antonina and Antoninus Pius columns. In the 1970s he dedicated himself to the study and measurement of the interior of the Pantheon, for which he made many drawings. In the 1780s the artist executed numerous works, such as the engraving of the monumental Plan of the existing factories in Hadrian's Villa in 1781. In 1784 the artist managed to sell many pieces from his father's collection, which constituted an important part of the Museum of Antiquities of Gustav III. He participated in the III Universal Exhibition in 1802 and was called as an art connoisseur and consultant on important affairs by the Ministry of the Interior. One of his most important works was the republication with French translation of his father's engravings. In 1806 he became editor of the Athenaeum magazine.
