Giovanni Battista Piranesi Biography

Piranesi Giovanni Battista (Mogliano Veneto, 1720 - Rome, 1778) Giovanni Battista Piranesi was an engraver and an architect. He trained in Venice with his uncle M. Lucchesi and the architect GA Scalfarotto. He developed his potential in the architectural field after moving to Rome in 1740, where he created some series of fantastic engravings and interpretations of the ancient. The artist's style centered around the use of the etching technique, through which he created dramatic compositions with chiaroscuro effects. Piranesi sided in favor of Roman architecture, underlining its technical superiority and inventive richness. From this period are the works "The ruins of the castle of Acqua Giulia" (1761) and the "Description and drawing of the emissary of Lake Albano" (1762). He also received many commissions from Clement XIII, such as the renovation of S. Maria del Priorato, in which he created the square in front of the garden and the decoration of the facade and interior.
