Ludovico Pogliaghi Biography

Lodovico Pogliaghi (Milan, 7 January 1857 – Sacro Monte di Varese, 30 June 1950) was an Italian sculptor, painter, set designer and decorator. Born in Milan in the last years of Austrian domination, he belongs to a family of the good Lombard bourgeoisie. His father was an engineer for the Imperial Royal Railway Company. He placed his residence and studio for over 50 years in the palace of the Marchesi Crivelli in via Pontaccio not far from the Brera Academy where he soon began teaching. But his long career can be traced back to a first important work for the parish church of Solzago (Como) where he executed a painting depicting the "Madonna fra Santi" (1878) and the "Nativity of the Virgin" for the church of San Donnino in Como in 1885. In 1886 he began a new artistic project which saw the publication of the "Illustrations for the History of Italy" published by Casa Treves. In the same years he began an internship under the direction of his Maestro Bertini for the furnishing of the Poldi Pezzoli Museum and for the eye-catching decoration of Palazzo Turati in via Meravigli in Milan. He taught in Brera where he also had as students the twins Carlo and Luigi Rigola who under his direction worked on the central doors of the Milan Cathedral (as Aldo Carpi writes). His pupil was also Gaetano Cresseri from Brescia. In 1910 he created the Pietà group in the expiatory chapel in memory of the assassination of King Umberto I in Monza in 1900.
