Gilbert Poillerat Biography

Born in 1902, Gilbert Poillerat is considered one of the leading masters of ironwork during his time. He graduated from the Ecole Bulle in 1921 and immediately after began working as a designer and pattern maker for Edgar Brandt. During this experience he was able to learn a lot about his craft, since Edgar Brandt was famous for his work in metal and even weapons manufacturing during the First World War. Throughout his career he has collaborated with designers of the caliber of Andre Arbus, Jaques Adnet and Jean Royere. His designs reflect his love of metal and design. His work represents a constant change in tastes over time. From the 1930s onwards, his designs became significantly simpler and more appealing than the neoclassical forms of the 18th century. The style he developed recalls the Ecole de Fontainebleau and the almost surreal preciousness that was fashionable among certain designers of that period. Compared to many other designers, Poillerat was more inspired by historical forms, creating elegant and delicate-looking objects. This can be seen through the use of details such as structural weaves. His motto, which reflects his work, was "iron is not an accessory, but an ornament". By the late 1930s, Poillerat was recognized as one of the most talented steelworkers of his generation. His pieces are known for being highly unique and he often produced limited editions. His work can be characterized as striking and dynamic.
