Gherardo Poli was born in Florence on 19 January 1676 and attended the Florentine Academy of Drawing, First Company of Painters in Pisa, in 1706. His passion for the theme of caprices, often influenced by Flemish and Dutch painting, manifested itself as early as since the beginning of his career. The only biographical information we have is briefly reported in volume III of the Lives of painters by Francesco Maria Niccolò Gabburri. Gherardo spent the last years of his life in Siena, where he found a stable residence at the end of the 1730s. His death occurred around 1739.
