Raffaele Pontremoli was born in Chieri in 1832 and studied at the Academies of Nice and Turin. In 1852, he was awarded a prize at the Turin Academy. During the Second War of Independence, in 1859, he participated as a reporter for "L'Illustration" and followed the Piedmontese troops in the Marche and Neapolitan areas, precisely describing a long series of military episodes. In 1880, he was appointed "Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy" by Umberto I. Two years later, in 1882, he was appointed Inspector of the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, where he spent the rest of his life. Pontremoli died in Milan in 1906.
