Salvatore Postiglione was born in Naples in 1861 and was a student of the Royal Institute of Fine Arts. However, due to the death of his father in the early eighties, he was forced to abandon his studies at the Academy. For this reason, he began to create works that responded to market demands to support himself financially. Once he had obtained his first successes and awards, he was able to dedicate himself to a more conscious painting, in line with his studies and with the artistic context in which he had trained. At first he created paintings with a historical-romantic theme and then dealt with portraiture and research on life, following the developments of the Realist School of Naples. In 1889-90 he participated in the decoration of the Gambrinus Brewery together with other painters. In 1890 he joined the Polytechnic Artistic Club of Naples and eleven years later he was appointed director of the Modena School of Painting, a position he held until 1904. Unfortunately, shortly after, he was struck by paralysis which forced him to abandon the teaching and to return to Naples, where he died in 1906.
