Vicente Poveda y Juan, born February 20, 1857 in Petrel, received his education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. His art was strongly influenced by painters such as Federico Madrazo, Mariano Fortuny and Joaquín Sorolla. He achieved excellent fame as a watercolourist, creating works that addressed themes such as eighteenth-century costumes, landscapes and gallant scenes. In addition to this, he also created some notable portraits. Starting from 1882, he lived in Rome thanks to a scholarship granted by the Academy of Madrid. Here he established his studio in via Margutta 35, deciding to move permanently to the city. Vicente Poveda died in Rome on 1 August 1935.
