Hugo Pratt Biography

Hugo Pratt born in Rimini on 15 June 1927 is the best-known Italian comics author and one of the most important in the world thanks to the famous character Corto Maltese. A versatile artist and great traveller, he was a precursor of the graphic novel.
After organizing shows in Venice, Hugo Pratt moved to Argentina at the invitation of the Editorial Abril publishing house. Here, collaborating with Editorial Frontera and holding drawing courses, he created the characters of "Junglemen" and "Sgt. Kirk". Later, he traveled to Brazil and drew his first comic, "Anna in the Jungle". He subsequently moved to Europe and collaborated with Fleetway Publications in London, but soon returned to South America.
In 1962 he returned to Italy, where he began to collaborate with "Il Corriere dei Ragazzi" and created the character of L'Ombra. He later meets the Genoese publisher Florenzo Ivaldi and, together with him, publishes the magazine "Sgt. Kirk", in which Corto Maltese's first adventure, "A ballad of the salty sea", is published. In the 70s he worked with Mino Milani on the adaptation of works by Emilio Salgari and designed for "Pif Gadget". In 1983 he collaborated with Milo Manara for the publication of "Everything started again with an Indian summer".
He died on 20 August 1995 in Lausanne.
