Gregorio Preti was an Italian painter born on 25 February 1603 in Taverna. Although he was a very talented artist, his name has always been overshadowed by that of his younger brother, Mattia.
Gregorio was a pupil of the famous Spagnoletto and Domenichino and from 1632, for forty years, he was part of the academy of San Luca and the Congregation of the Virtuosi al Pantheon.
In Rome, where Gregory lived, it is likely that he had the protection of the Aldobrandini, which allowed him to form important relationships with collectors of works of art. Read the full biography

His creations present a mix of classical pictorial tradition and Caravaggio innovation, although his brother understood and executed it with greater force. Gregory died in Rome on 25 January 1672.
