Gaetano Previati Biography

Gaetano Previati, born on 31 August 1852 in Ferrara, was an Italian painter who joined the divisionist and symbolist movements. He began his pictorial studies at the School of Fine Arts in Ferrara, where he had Paglierini and Domenichini as teachers. Subsequently, he moved to Florence and then to Milan, where he studied at the Brera Academy under the guidance of Bertini's free nude courses. In this environment, Previati came into contact with the Lombard Scapigliatura and adopted its themes, often characterized by sentimental and romantic nuances. Previati embraced an "ideist" art, focusing on pointillist technique. The artist approached the symbolist-religious trend. The work "Mattino" became the model for his new style through the "splitting of color", which creates the impression of a greater intensity of light. In 1892 he participated in the I Salon de la Rose-Croix in Paris, where he had the opportunity to come into contact with the Parisian esoteric group of the Rosicrucians. In his final period, Previati painted still lifes and seascapes, perhaps as an attempt to recover the naturalistic experience. The painter died in Lavagna on 21 June 1920.
