Eugene Printz Biography

Eugène Printz, born on 1 June 1889 in Paris, did not attend any academic institute as a cabinetmaker or decorator, however his father, a wood craftsman, introduced him to woodworking techniques from an early age. In particular, he taught him to reproduce antique furniture in the Louis XI and Louis XV style. Encouraged by the architect-decorator Pierre Chareau, who recognized his talent, Eugène Printz began creating his own works of modern furniture. But, unlike many other modernist designers, he regarded furniture as luxury items. Success and recognition came quickly after his participation in the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1925. As a result, he received numerous commissions for interior design and became a leading figure in the design field of the time. Thus the Eugène Printz style was born. The economic crisis of 1930 and the Second World War forced Eugène Printz to adapt and produce limited collections, using less valuable woods. Eugène Printz died of cancer in 1948 in Paris.
